I think it has a lot to do with the size of the home population.
The Portuguese and Dutch populations were small compared to the English, Spanish and French.
The Portuguese and Dutch settlers stayed mainly on the coast and harbors and the forts on the harbors. From there they set up trading with the inlanders. The English, Spanish and French went far more inland to settle and set up trading within their own native group.
Funny anomaly: Paraguay. At the the time the Spanish settled in almost all South America, Paraguay was the last area to conquer/settle.
