The Roman Catholic Church stayed in power even throughout the Middle Ages, as the Church became richer and had more powerful members inside it's body. However, the Catholic Church started to diminish during the Protestant Reformation and the Age of Science (?) (with Galileo and his founding that the earth was not in the center of the universe).
