The Siege of Nicaea took place during the First Crusade, May 14 - June 19, 1097. Captured by the Byzantine empire, Nicaea was known as the capitol of the Sultanate of Rum. On June 26, the crusaders left in two contingents expecting to return in five weeks. However, they did not reach Jerusalem for 2 years after having left. This would be the first battle and success of the First Crusade.

the siege of nicaea took place from may 14 to june 19 in the year 1097. the siege happened between seljuk turks vs. crusaders and and byzantine forces. the town nicaea was taken by the turks in 1081 under the rule of sultan kilij arslan. the crusaders plus a byzantine force came into nicaea on the 14th of may. on the 21st of may, the crusaders defeated the sultan despite lots of blood being lost on both sides. towards the beginning of june, the rest of the crusaders arrived, ready to fight. alexios the first didn't want to join the crusaders, so he camped out at pelecanum, where he sent boats to block the main source of food for the turks. he wanted to secretly negotiate a surrender with the turks against the crusaders and enlisted the general Tatikios. Tatikios succeeded, and the turks surrendered. however the crusaders wanted to plunder nicaea, and so they were very mad at Alexios. No matter how much money or food alexios gave, the crusaders were not pleased with him. Boutoumites was named dux of nicaea and fired all turkish generals. the crusaders ended up leaving nicaea on july 1st.
