In response to the rebellion, the king issued the proclamation line of 1763, which prohibited colonists from settling west of the appalachians. those colonials who had already moved would have to relocate, and only licensed trappers and traders could enter the region. the government created the proclamation as a stalling tactic to give itself time to reorganize, but it angered the colonials who saw it as unnecessary. the increased population, due to new settlers and birth, had made free land scarce, and most colonials believed the proclamation showed a lack of british sympathy for their plight. besides, the colonists argued, they had earned the land fighting during the war, and the natives could be conquered.
