The Democrats

The Democrats gained control of the  Congress in 1874 because of Ulysses  Grant's and his cabinets' numerous scandals. The economic crisis that happened all along hurt the Republicans' credibility giving the Democrats to gain control.  

Grant ’s military style rather than a  civilian caused more scandals.
