Alexander the Great was the leader of the kingdom of Macedonia, that he expanded from Greece to India during his rule. Although it was a vast empire, it was a fragile one thus it inevitably broke into several civil wars the following years after his death. The empire ended up being divided by three of his former generals, into three powerful dynasties: the Seleucids of Syria and Persia, the Ptolemies of Egypt and the Antigonids of Greece and Macedonia.

These newly formed dynasties served as the framework for the spread of the Greek, or Hellenic, culture and its mixture with indigenous people and culture of the Near East, Middle East, and Southwest Asia. It resulted in a fusion of culture, and a society with different and particular characteristics arose (like the adoption of a new Greek dialect as the lingua franca of the Hellenistic world), this period was named the Hellenistic Age.
