Why did some union members feel that chinese laborers would undercut union negotiations?

Some of the union members were on the opinion that the Chinese laborers would undercut the negotiations of the union (and at this period of time rightly so) because the Chinese laborers would work the same jobs for lesser amount of money, which was totally opposite from what the union has been trying to accomplish with the negotiations.
