What is the difference between a direct democracy and a republic

In a republic, laws are made by representatives chosen by the people and must comply with a constitution that specifically protects the rights of the minority from the will of the majority. A direct democracy is  a form of democracy in which the people themselves, rather than elected representatives, determine the laws and policies by which they are governed.

this was done so the church could remain in control of what their teachings were and to enhance their importance and power, while also being able to judge people's actions through information that was unavailable for the general public.
