With side that support the Constitution, the Federalists, they believed that the federal government was necessary for the United States to thrive and function in a well-balanced system.  They believed that a strong central government was necessary to balance out power between the states and the federal government.

Before the Constitution was written, the Articles of Confederation did not work, in which the states loosely controlled their own governments.  This further shows why the country wanted to write an entire new document with having the power of the federal government hold the country together.  

To continue to support the Constitution, many of these supporters like Alexander Hamilton believed changes to the Constitution could be made if necessary along the way.

On the other hand, the people against the Constitution were called Anti-Federalists.  Like Thomas Jefferson, these people believed that the states should have more control than the federal government.  They believed the Constitution gave too much power to the federal government and not to the people. Their argument was justified with The Bill of Rights being created to outline specific laws for the people as written in The Constitution.
