The Cabinet consists of appointment people who run federal sectors of the government such as national security, education, state affairs, economy, etc. These people are appointed by the sitting president and are expected to create policy in their specific area. These department heads work with the president to execute their political agenda. The policies can lead to legislation or laws which then require the cabinet member to work with Congress to create laws and get them passed and funded.

The departments of the US Cabinet have changed over time dependent upon the needs of the federal government. The cabinet currently includes the Vice President, the Secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Labor, State, Transportation, Treasury, and Veterans Affairs, and the Attorney General. The Department of Homeland Security is the newest cabinet position being added by the GW Bush administration following the 9/11/2001 attacks.
