John Locke (1632-1704) is an English philosopher and one of the most influential thinkers in the Enlightment period. He is known as the "Father of classical liberalism", thefore he defends pursuing the own interest (individualism) as the right mechanism to obtain the best outcome for the majority too.

He was one of the first empiricists and also developed the social contract theory.
