The supreme court ruling on the civil rights cases of 1883

In the Civil Rights Cases of 1883, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which had forbbiden racial discrimination in trains, hotels, and some other public places, was unconstitutional.

In an 8-1 decision, the court ruled that the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution did not grant Congress the power to regulate the affairs of private individuals and businesses.
