Before Stanton narrowed his political focus almost exclusively to women's rights, she was an active abolitionist, along with her husband, Henry Brewster Stanton and her cousin, Gerrit Smith. Her concerns included the parental and custodial rights of women, property rights, employment and income rights, divorce laws, the family's economic health and birth control, positioning herself against abortion.
