Dictated by England, New Hampshire was made a royal province on July 24, 1679.  Before this, New Hampshire belonged to  Massachusetts Bay Colony. The strife of control and territory between both colonies solidified its ultimate separation, and the province was officially under a royal governor, Benning Wentworth, in 1741.
