The Scopes trial was related to American Legal case in year 1925. In this trial a high school teacher was made accused of violating Tennessee Butler Act. Under this Act teaching Human Evolution was considered as unlawful act. This act was knowingly and deliberately staged to gain publicity for the town of Dayton from Tennessee. The name of the accused was John T.  

Scopes was unsure that if he has actually taught 'Evolution' to his students or not. But he purposely made himself guilty so that the case can have a defendant. Court found Scopes guilty of this act and was fined 100$ which was considered as a hefty fine during that time. Soon this verdict was ruled out due to 'Technicality'. This case soon gained intense Publicity and this became soon controversy between Modernists and Fundamentalists.  

Modernists said that Evolution was not inconsistent with regards to religion whereas Fundamentalists said that the word of “God' as mentioned in Bible had priority over all the human Knowledge. The trail raised the question that should modern science taught in Schools or not. This case was further sent to the higher bench of court which is “Supreme Court”.  

Defence argued that the evolution was a scientific fact or change and everyone has to cope up with it.
