Stephen Douglas was a politician from Illinois who proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act as with the initial purpose of opening up thousands of new farms and make feasible a Midwestern Transcontinental Railroad. The popular sovereignty clause of the law led pro- and anti-slavery elements to flood into Kansas with the goal of voting slavery up or down, resulting in Bleeding Kansas.

Frederick Douglas was a great social reformer who had escaped from the slavery in Maryland and he published in New York a famous anti-slavery newspaper called "The North Star" which slogan was "Right is of no Sex—Truth is of no Color—God is the Father of us all, and we are all Brethren.
