Mahatma Gandhi was already an activist for various social causes, but when the British imposed the salt tax Gandhi started his revolution. The Salt Tax was a tax imposed by Britain to destroy India’s long-established tradition of salt-making. Salt was very important to the Indian society and because of that, Gandhi led protests with the Salt March which contributed to the Indian Independence movement.

Also, he asks the judge to give him the highest penalty if he really believes that the law that is imposed on him is the best for the people of India.
