On the other hand, states like Virginia grew tobacco because of their climate and growing season. This was then extremely different from slaves in the North. Considering the short growing season and frigid temperatures, many slaves did not work on plantations. Rather they worked in the shipping or boating industry since that is what the Northern economy relied on.
