What did africans do to iron ore during the iron age in order to make it possible to create iron tools and weapons?

Hello! I believe that Iron ore was placed in blast furnaces in order to create tools and weapons during the Iron Age. They key to the process was the removal of the oxygen from the iron ore at the same time separating as many of the other impurities as possible. I hope this helps! :)
