The Freedmen's Bureau was initiated during the time the government was eradicating slavery and after American civil war. The Bureau provided welfare services to rebuild lives of people and communities affected by war.

The help provided included distributing rations to both blacks and white who were poor, proving physical aid to the freed African American to help get accustomed with life after slavery. Other improvements included building hospitals and black schools. It also donated money to provide training to assist in education.
