How would you evaluate president johnsons leadership during the vietnam war and his decisions not to seek a second term as president?

I am just a highschooler but this is my opinion on the matter..

After John F. Kennedy was assassinated and so was his brother, I feel as if Johnson had big shoes to fill when he was elected, at first he had great public appeal with promises of helping poverty stricken Americans, however his decline in public appeal began when he escalated America's involvement in the Vietnam war, in 1963 there were only about 15,000 troops in Vietnam, by 1967 there were well over 500,000. This caused uproar in the U.S. followed by increased violence, as the public felt that their soldiers had no business fighting another country's war and losing so many troops because of it. Another poor decision on Johnson's part was seemingly focusing on the war more than home, most of his promises including the fight on poverty and better healthcare were not yielding any results, resulting in the public growing more and more angrier with Johnson. Near the end of his presidency it was even estimated that less than 20 percent of Americans still supported him, so he resigned his presidency and did not go for a second term.

-two-thirds of congress must approve.

-thee-quarters of states must approve.

-the proposed amendment becomes law.
