Sudan is predominantly an arid (dry), desert land except immediately around the Nile River, which flows northward through central and eastern Sudan. Sudan gained independence from Britain in 1956 but became embattled in civil war for much of the second half of the twentieth century. The first civil war ended in 1972, but the region had only about a decade before a second civil war broke out in 1983 and continued until January 2005.
