In what ways was racism common in both north and the south

In the North, "many whites refused to go to school with, work with, or live near African Americans."

*Also, in most states, even free African Americans could not vote.

Both the north and the south believed that in general white people were better, there seems to be a strong theme of treating the coloured people as children who need to be take care of and dealt with. They treated them as though they were dumb.
