The split in Christianity came about mostly because of the hats. The Roman Catholic Church attempted to reform itself in the Counter Reformation, but they did not stop wearing the big hats. The Pope had the biggest, ugliest hat of all. In addition, Protestant ministers don't wear the dresses or frocks that the Catholics priests do.
