Located in Massachusetts, the Lowell Mills were the first hint of the Industrial Revolution in the United States. The textile mill introduced a new manufacturing system called the "Lowell system". A vital part of this new system was the factory's decision to hire young women, usually single, between ages 15 and 35 who were known as "mill girls".
