The Spanish encountered local civilizations that were demographically larger. The Inca and the Mexicas lived in cities that dwarfed even the largest cities in Europe.  

When the Brittish and French arrived and started to colonize the North roughly 90 years later, European diseases had decimated the native population.  

There were differences in the colonization process. The pilgrims and puritans moved into the continent as whole families and avoided mixing with the natives. In the Spanish lands, there was much more mixture.
