The idea of limited government is a product of the Enlightenment and one of the most important requirements of modern democracies. This idea has been part of the United States since its foundation, and it is at the core of how Americans understand the role of government.

A limited government is one that follows laws, and has limited jurisdiction in many subjects. It is also one that recognizes that people have a right to privacy and liberty, and that the government cannot infringe upon these. Many Americans insist on limiting the power of government because they want to make sure that the government is not above the law. They also want to make sure that citizens are protected from abuses of the government, and that they are able to exercise their liberties without unfair punishment.
