Why were medieval manors nearly self-sufficient?
nobles allowed serfs to earn freedom as long as the manor ran smoothly.
the establishment of a middle class provided a stable economy and thus little direction was needed.
it was not necessary to hire anyone on the manor and most of the materials needed were on the premises.
slaves were brought in to run the manor efficiently.
