after the enlightenment began in france, republicanism grew in the region, which is a political belief where monarchies should be ended, this was caused by the tidal waves of debt received   after aiding america in the revolutionary war, the seven years war, & many other reasons. this led to a mass wave of exodus from the crown which brought revolutionaries to take over france. the monarchy, nobility, and clergy (and even more) were murdered in the form of the guillotine. revolutionary france was soon invaded by neighboring monarchies who were afraid the influence would spread into their countries. soon the experienced napoleon bonaparte (from corsica, a island near italy (not actually french)) became first consul of the french republic, with two other consuls (who didn't have much power) also led. napoleon crowed himself in 1804 and the napoleonic wars perused.
