the civil war started because of the differences between the northeast and the southeast of the u.s. the south wanted to keep slavery, while the north wanted to abolish it completely. this caused seven slave states in the south to break off from everyone and form the confederate states. abraham lincoln, who just became president, along with most of the northeast did not see the confederates as legitimate, they feared that it would further separate the country and have them break off as a total separate country. in charleston, south carolina is where the first battle of the civil war broke out. the confederates took fire, which caused lincoln to call in more troops, which angered people and four more slave states joined the confederacy. more and more battles ended up breaking out, which eventually led to the end of the civil war where the confederate states finally surrendered.
