In history, imperialism started earlier than the 16th century majorly instigated by the Europeans. They sought trade opportunities in the South and North America, the Far East and other parts of Asia. In Africa and China, they worked closely with the natives to guarantee the protection of Europeans. This is the example of old imperialism.  

New imperialism had imperialists setting up administration offices in the native settlements for the benefit and influence of the colonists and their power. It also gained momentum fueled by economic, religious, political, humanitarian reasons, etc.
