These wars dug deep into the coffers of the British Empire, who saw a deficit in the amount of funding they had. As the citizens of Great Britain who were living in the U.K. already had a large burden of the taxes, the British government decided to transfer some of those burdens to the colonies abroad, including the American colonists.  This is essentially why the American colonies were taxed.
