What is the proper relationship between religion and government?

Religion is something that someone chooses to believe in wither its right or wrong. Take god as an example, i am a christian and i chose to believe in god. Government is something that is supposed to keep us safe and protect us. The government allows us to have our own beliefs or religions. ( This might help?)
