How are the principles of separation of powers and checks and balances related?

Both the separation of powers and checks and balances have the intention of dividing government institutions into different branches for the sake of no one having total governmental power. Both principles are used as a way to ensure that a branch of government isn’t overstepping their power or abusing their power.
