reconstruction was a tricky issue because several groups held, strong, conflicting views concerning the reintegration of confederate states into the union. in this activity you will research and summarize the view of each group concerning the goals of reconstruction.

The Radical Republicans wanted: To establish the economic and financial stability of South but at the same time, wanted to punish confederate leaders. They were also radically against slavery wanted to abolish it as soon as possible.

Moderates (national unity party) wanted: Moderates wanted to reestablish the economic and financial stability of Southern States but also did not believe in harsh punishments for Confederate leaders. While they wanted to provide freedom to slaves, they shied away from giving equal rights in every sense.

Democrats wanted:  To NOT help in the reconstruction efforts of the South. They were also pro-slavery and did not believe in freeing slaves.

The Radical Republicans were an informal group within the Republican party which called for an immediate abolition of slavery without any compromise. It was made of religious men who believed slavery was against God's will and held very strong views.
