Pickett´s charge was an absolute failure, a terrible carnage suffered by the forces of the Confederation at the hands of the Union army of Maj. Gen. George Meade at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. It was the climax of the Battle of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania. Maj. Gen. George Pickett led a charge by some 12,500-15,000 men across a field nearly three quarters of a mile long. General Robert E. Lee, chief commander of the Confederate army, had been unsucessfully attacking the flanks of the Union troops. He ordered a full charge against the enemy´s center. They were heavily bombarded, easy targets for the North´s canons and rifle fire. Losses amounted to nearly 50%. The South never fully recovered from this blow psychologically and militarily.
