Supporters of the spoils system often claimed that as a system it was actually more democratic than the one already in place. President Jackson famously claimed of the spoils system that those who already worked for him would be able to do the work just as well as those who were already present in office. He felt that being able to reward those who were loyal to him politically was a right he had as president.
