Richard Nixon served as the 37th U.S. president from 1969 through 1974. He was responsible for signing into legislation both the Clean Air Act (1972) and the Endangered Species Act (1973).

On December 2, 1970, Nixon signed an executive order to create The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a federal agency whose mission is to protect human and environmental health. Two years later, the organization passed its first piece of legislation, the Clean Air Act. The Act aimed to regulate air emissions from both stationary (industries) and mobile (such as vehicles) sources.

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed the following year, on December 28, 1973, with the purpose of protecting and recovering imperiled species from extinction as well as the ecosystems upon which they depend.
