Martin van Buren American lawyer and politician. Secretary of State between 1829 and 1833. Vice President of the nation between 1833 and 1837 under the presidency of Andrew Jackson. Eighth president of the United States of America in the period 1837 to 1841. Responsible for the coalition that would lead to the current Democratic Party. During his presidential term he had to face a deep economic crisis that affected all the social sectors of the country, whose measures adopted and consequences made him an unpopular president. During the secessionist crisis, he took sides with the abolitionist cause and supported the presidential candidacy of Republican Abraham Lincoln.
