Explanation:

The Dred Scott case was a major blow to civil rights. In it the court ruled that even though Scott had lived in the free world, he was not to be granted any rights and was still to be considered a slave. In other words, if your history course is asking you about this, it is because it was one major roadblock in the fight against slavery.
