The Civil Rights movement was raised to eliminate racial discrimination against African Americans. This movement demanded a proper lifestyle, education and job opportunities to be given without any racial discrimination.

After the American civil war the government worked on the Reconstruction making the slaves part of the society as citizens and giving them land ownership.  

Then came a major setback for the Afro Americans in the form of a judgment in the Supreme court in the year 1896. It was ruled in Plessy V.Ferguson which said that “Separate but equal” which favoured discrimination.
