When abolition occurred what happened is that the slaves gained the rights and responsibilities within each nation, so according to the treaties and self-governing principles that each tribe had with the United States government. There continues to be tension about this today in the Cherokee Nation for example as some African American slave descendants claim tribal membership based on the treaties that were in place at the time of emancipation.
