The term was born in the Civil Rights fight. Student Nonviolent Coordinating chairman, Stokely Carmichael, used the term for the first time in 1966 during the Meredith March in Mississippi. He rallied students by using the words "we want Black Power." Black Power was a movement that called for racial pride and economic empowerment of African Americans.
