In the short term, the fall of the Berlin Wall accelerated the end of communism in Europe and it started a process that led to German reunification after almost half a century of two separate states. Ideological and political divisions practically disappeared in Europe; the Iron Curtain was torn apart. It is also the prologue to the current phase of globalization we live in with free flows of capital around the globe, precariousness in employment and jobs, increased inequality and unprecedented technological interconnectedness.

In the long run, that event heralded the advent of a new world order that is still configurating. There was a moment of unipolarity with the US as the only superpower that had could impose its will anywhere; after the Iraq War, that unipolarity has been erosioned and now we have a rather multipolar world with a sole superpower and few important centers of power. One relevant outcome is the consolidation of the European Union as a relevant international actor. Another major outcome is the evolution of the communist regime in China, which made succesful economic reforms that have allowed robust growth and fast modernization, and it is now a major emerging power.
