We can say that the French king lost the aura of being a superior being, someone who ruled with divine authority.  His standing was severely diminished by the assault on the Bastille and the following events in a climate of social anger and agitation. When he and his family went to Versailles, they were forced to go back to Paris by the people - who particularly hated the extravagant queen Marie Antoinette and her lavish lifestyle -, king Louis XVI´s position became very weak, he was practically a hostage. He and his wife were guillotined in the end.
