Ogden

Gibbons vs. Ogden was a case that reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1824 where Gibbons argued that he had the right to use his steamboat on a particular channel that Ogden had a state license that gave him monopoly over.

The Supreme Court decided that granting licenses to use steamboats fell under interstate commerce which is governed by Congress. The federal license held by Gibbons could therefore be used on the Ogden's route.
