Yevgeny's concern would be that his seven-year-old kid was discovered smoking by the governess, as well as the boy took the tobacco from Yevgeny's desk to boot.

Seryozha's guardian informs Yevgeny that Seryozha was discovered smoking some of his father's cigarettes.

Yevgeny is having problems accepting this; as a prosecutor, his mode of thinking causes him to be emotionally disconnected, making it difficult for him to communicate with his kid.
