O coronelismo faz parte de um período da história do Brasil em que o país tinha muitas fazendas e proprietários de terras (latifundiários). Por terem interesses em comum, nessa época existia uma relação de proximidade entre os donos dessas terras e os governantes. Assim, nas questões políticas existia uma troca de ajuda entre eles. Os donos das terras recebiam dos governantes o título de coronel.
