There were several plans in the United States to buy Cuba from the Spanish Empire. When Spanish influence in the Caribbean waned, the United States, on the other hand, gained it in economics and politics, as well as in Cuban affairs.

Following the 1959 Cuban Revolution, relations between the two nations deteriorated and have been marked by tension ever since.
