I Richard captured Lord Thomas
Stanley's son and threatened to kill
him if Stanley did not fight for him.
Richard brought a cannon to the battle
the greatest weapon of the time.
Lord Thomas Stanley swapped sides
during the battle and turned against
Richard in favour of Henry.
Part of Richard's army did not
enter the fight. The Duke of
Northumberland may have been
unhappy with Richard, or simply
unable to act as they had been
positioned in an awkward place.

Henry's army was made up of
experienced mercenaries from France,
as well as loyalist Welsh troops.
Henry spent his childhood in Wales
and the previous 14 years in France.
Richard impetuously charged Henry's
position with a small bodyguard,
hoping to kill Henry quickly.

Henry had little experience of battle
so gave command of his army to the
Duke of Oxford
Henry stayed back from the fighting,
surrounded by bodyguards.
Henry's army stayed closely bunched
together. If they had spread out they
may have been easier to destroy.
Henry's men seemed to perform better
than Richard's once hand-to-hand
combat was joined
Richard was cut down by Lord
Stanley's men before he could get to
Henry. Analysis of his skeleton show
eight serious head wounds.
Some soldiers left Richard's army to
join Henry some days before the battle.
